The causes of misted double-glazed windows
Are you suffering from misty windows?
- Misted double-glazing: Cloudy units, foggy windows, blown or failed double glazing, whatever the term used, it’s usually a sign that your double glazing has broken down and the panes of glass need replacing.
- Easy process: Don’t panic; you do not have to replace the entire window; this can usually be fixed with replacement double glazing, meaning only the glass is replaced and not the whole window frame, making it a cost-effective solution instead of paying out for new windows.
- Window types: Whether you have wooden, UPVC, aluminium windows, or doors, we can help.
- Energy efficiency: Misted double-glazed windows can not only be unsightly, obstructing your view, but if left untreated, can affect the energy efficiency of your home or business and, in the long run, may result in higher energy bills with heat loss being an issue.
- Why do they mist up?: There are various reasons that contribute to why your window units break down, causing a build-up of condensation, with the most common reason being time. Over time, the seals around your window deteriorate, and moisture can enter your glass panes. The excess moisture can result in condensation meaning your units become misted and will not perform as they should.
We often get asked how this happens
- How it’s made: A double-glazed unit has two pieces of glass with a spacer bar between them, creating a gap for air or gas to circulate (also known as argon gas filled). In short, this air gap helps keep cold and warm air out. The two glass and spacer bar panes are then sealed together to create a double-glazed unit.
- How it works: There is a small grainy-like substance (known as a desiccant) used in the spacer bar within the double-glazed unit whose purpose is to absorb any water vapour that manages to get past your unit’s edge sealant.
- How it breaks down: Over time, this becomes saturated, and as a result of the moisture having nowhere to escape and the desiccant not being able to absorb any more water vapour, a build-up of condensation between the two panes occurs, creating the not-so-lovely foggy window effect.
- How it affects you: This is not just an eyesore but would affect natural light, so it would be a good idea to get it sorted sooner rather than later. Condensation can be worse in Winter months, impacting the energy efficiency of your windows.
Other reasons could be down to:
Poor fitting, broken units, faulty seals or poor maintenance. Care should also be taken when cleaning your windows with harsh chemicals, as this can be harmful to your double-glazing.

BENEFITS OF Misted double-glazing replacement
- Improves the view: It’s easy to keep putting off replacing your misted double-glazing units, as, let’s be honest, there is always something to pay out for. However, if left untreated, it could affect more than just your view.
- Draught free: When you have condensation problems, and your double-glazing has failed, your window panes are no longer working as they should. This could result in costly warm air escaping from your home and cold air entering your property.
- Stops a build-up of dampness, mould and mildew: Although not much of an issue in summer, if left for a long time in the winter months, this becomes a problem as the energy efficiency of your windows will be affected and could cause a build-up of dampness, mould and mildew. It’s not ideal if you already suffer from respiratory infections.
- Noise control: When your double glazing is functioning correctly noise levels from outside should be reduced. Faulty double glazing can affect external noise levels.
- Property value: Fixing the problem early keeps your double glazing functioning as it should. This helps avoid costly repairs down the line if left untreated and keeps your house looking good if trying to sell your property.
- Energy efficiency: You do not need to wait until your double glazing has failed in order to consider an upgrade. We offer replacement double glazing to help enhance its efficiency. Keep reading to see the different glass specifications we offer.

Misted Double Glazing Replacements FAQS
Why are my windows foggy?
This is usually an indication your window seals have broken down. Main contributor being your windows being old and excess moisture between your double glazing having nowhere to escape. You can find out more here. (link to blog)
I have condensation on the outside of my windows, does this need to be changed?
With our lovely British weather condensation outside your windows it is totally normal and usually a sign your windows are working as they should keeping moisture out. It is when moisture is building up between your double glazing when the issue should be addressed.
I have a couple of blown units, would you offer a discount for more than one?
Yes, send us some sizes of what you require, and we would be happy to discuss pricing.
Can I replace misted double glazed windows myself?
We would not recommend changing double glazing yourself unless you are an experienced glazier. The glass needs to be replaced with a new double glazed unit like for like and professional help would be needed.
How much would it cost to replace my window?
The price would vary depending on the glass size and the specification of the glass. On average our units start from £195 + vat for a small float unit however it would be best to send over a size or photo then we can give you a personalised quote based on your requirements.
How long does the repair process take?
Once we have given you a price and you are happy to proceed we would arrange for a glazier to come by to measure up. We would then normally take a deposit and your unit is put into production. It would vary on the specification of glass in your replacement double glazing but on average float units take around a week to manufacture, however if your double-glazing is toughened glass which by law is required in doors such as patio doors, french doors, etc then the toughening process can take around a couple of weeks, although sometimes this can be quicker.
